South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) is a multi-service umbrella organization. Since 1965, SMOC has evolved to meet a wider range of challenges that people in our communities face. Our four main areas of programming include: Behavioral Health Services; Comprehensive Housing Services; Employment and Education and Family and Nutrition. SMOC is affiliated with the Open Pantry Community Services in Springfield, providing housing, food and supportive services throughout Western Mass and meeting the needs of homeless individuals in Central Mass through the Greater Worcester Housing Connection and in North Middlesex County through the Lowell Transitional Living Center. SMOC programs apply best known practices in environments that are client-centered, strength-based and trauma-informed. Our mission, “To improve the quality of life of low-income and disadvantaged individuals and families by advocating for their needs and rights; providing services; educating the community; building a community of support; participating in coalitions with other advocates and searching for new resources and partnerships.” SMOC provides integrated community-based services recognizing that the lives of individuals and families are complex and that needs are inter-related. As a community action agency, SMOC also seeks to create new opportunities for self-sufficiency through community advocacy. SMOC is the designated community-based anti-poverty agency in the Metrowest area and is headquartered in Framingham Mass.
