Backyard Butterflies engaged and conducts multiple activities and events annually during the Lepidoptera season.
Education: We provide Lepidoptera education via classes, workshops, butterfly counts, and moth nights.
Community Outreach: We attend public festivals and community events. We offer multiple opportunities for citizen science through our NABA butterfly counts and moth nights.
Backyard Habitats: The symbiotic relationship between Lepidoptera species and host plants is crucial to the Lepidoptera life cycle. This aspect of our mission includes Plant Production, Plant Sale Fundraisers, and maintenance of our Backyard Habitat.
Our annual events include Annual Moth Night during National Moth Week, Annual Open House & Plant Swap in June, and the Hillsborough Moth Crawl. We also conduct the North Carolina Under-reported County Mothing Project (NCUCMP) through the NC Moth Project, a citizen science project targeting under-reported counties within the state.
Our programs include the Caterpillar Support Program in which we offer free support and assistance to help people who have caterpillars in need of host plants to complete their life cycle. Our Plant Donation Program awards Plant Grants to qualifying groups, organizations, schools, churches, libraries, and HOAs.
