    About Us

Asphalt Green is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals of all ages and backgrounds achieve health through a lifetime of sports and fitness. Opened in 1984 as a neighborhood recreation center on the site of New York City’s former Municipal Asphalt Plant at York and 91 st Street in Manhattan, community service is at the core of our origin and at the heart of our mission. This mission continues at our newly opened second location in Battery Park City.

We are especially focused on making fitness and athletics available for children, families, and seniors in low-income, underserved communities so they can establish more active, healthy lives. In doing so, we promote health, equipping New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds with the knowledge and fitness habits they need to fight obesity and other chronic diseases. We serve more than 26,000 inner city kids for free through our core programs: Recess Enhancement Program (REP), Waterproofing, Community Sports Leagues (CSL), and scholarships.
