Bike Walk Tompkins (BWT) grew out of the organizing group for Streets Alive! Ithaca and provides a central push for active transportation (i.e. biking and walking) in Tompkins County. We work collaboratively with other people and organizations to influence and change the culture and infrastructure for biking and walking in Ithaca and Tompkins County so that more people can embrace active transportation in their everyday lives. By making walking and biking more prevalent, our community will reap the multiple health, environmental, economic and social benefits associated with strong active transportation networks.
Bike Walk Tompkins was formally organized in May 2014 as a project of the Center for Transformative Action, and in July we hired our first program director. In 2016, BWT moved to our current home at The Center for Community Transportation, a local non-profit with the mission of enhancing community access to transportation while reducing the negative environmental and economic impacts of car use. BWT has been generously funded in part by the Park Foundation.
