The Minnesota Alliance for Progressive Action (MAPA)and Progressive Minnesota have joined forces to create TakeAction Minnesota. TakeAction Minnesota will be a stronger voice for Minnesota progressives and to further our common goals of social, racial and economic justice. Building upon the strengths of both in coalition-building, advocating at the state legislature, and grassroots organizing, this new organization will give us a powerful new voice in Minnesota and put progressive candidates into office in 2006.
In the short term, TakeAction Minneosta will carry on the crucial electoral and legislative work that made both MAPA and Progressive Minnesota such powerful forces in Minnesota politics. In the state legislature TakeAction Minnesota will focus on voting rights, immigrant rights, public financing for elections, health care for workers of companies like Wal-Mart and defeating the constitutional amendment against gay marriage. Electorally TakeAction Minnesota will focus on getting a progressive majority in the state legislature and mobilizing Hmong and other new immigrant communities to vote. At the same time, these strategies will be integrated into a longer-term agenda that will amplify progressive voices and help progressives build and sustain power. Overall, our aim is to shift the dominant public discourse away from its current focus on individualism, limited government and the primacy of the market to one of strong communities, democracy and equal opportunity for all.
