About Us

PTCB was established in January 1995 and is governed by five organizations: the American Pharmacists Association; the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists; the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists; the Michigan Pharmacists Association; and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. PTCB develops, maintains, promotes, and administers a nationally accredited certification and recertification program for pharmacy technicians to enable the most effective support of pharmacists to advance patient safety. Since 1995, PTCB has advocated for a single national standard for pharmacy technician certification that is recognized and supported by the profession. Establishing a single standard for pharmacy technician certification through PTCB is consistent with the approach used by other health professions, as well as the approach utilized within the pharmacist licensure process.
