About Us

Project Gaia is a United States-based non-profit organization that is part of a global initiative promoting clean-cooking fuels, particularly alcohol cooking stoves, for those living in poverty. The Project Gaia Research Initiative currently has programs in Ethiopia, Haiti, and Nigeria. It is also involved in projects in Madagascar, Brazil, and Kenya, and has completed studies in South Africa and Malawi.

Project Gaia seeks to:

  • Raise awareness of the safety, health, economic and environmental benefits of alcohol fuels,
  • Share insights and resources with government and private organizations, whether business or non-profit, working in related endeavors,
  • Initiate or assist with demonstration projects that show the viability of alcohol as a household fuel,
  • Build on this experience to encourage locally managed commercialization of alcohol fuels and appliances,
  • Reduce carbon emissions, and thereby facilitate access to carbon finance to support low-income communities.
