Programs and Services

Adoption Program

TAILS cares for over 2,500 displaced pets each year. We accept pets from owners who can no longer keep them and from Good Samaritans who have found a homeless pet. We also work with animal control organizations and other animal welfare organizations, accepting pets from overcrowded shelters when our assistance is needed.

Find your new best friend at TAILS Humane Society! We have many adorable adoptables waiting for their Forever Homes. Whether you're a cat fancier, a dog lover, or you have a place in your heart for the feathered or the small and furry, think of TAILS first. If we can't fill that spot in your life with one of our adoptables, we'll provide you with information about other pet resources where you can adopt responsibly.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic

The tragedy of pet overpopulation exists in our community as it does throughout the country, primarily because of the number of unaltered pets that produce litter after litter of puppies and kittens without homes. TAILS is committed to doing everything in our power to eliminate the needless euthanasia of unwanted dogs and cats. We make it a high priority to spay or neuter all of our dogs and cats prior to adoption. TAILS' low-cost spay/neuter program is available to all pet owners regardless of income or residency. Call today for your pet's appointment! (815) 758-0762.

Pawsitive TAILS Animal Assisted Activities Program

Animal assisted activities programs are designed to improve the quality of life of people through controlled interactions with specially trained and certified animals and their handlers.

Though dogs tend to be the most common species involved with AAA programs, cats, birds, bunnies, pot bellied pigs and even miniature horses have been highly successful participants. Retirement facilities, schools, mental health facilities and a variety of other service organizations have clients who can benefit from AAA programs.

Pawsitive TAILS aims to partner with a variety of human service organizations throughout DeKalb County, providing scheduling of visits as well as training and certification of AAA pets and their handlers.

Catalyst Program

The Catalyst Program provides opportunities for adolescents in need who benefit from the human-animal bond and wish to make positive changes in their lives, local animal shelters, and communities. By providing them with opportunities to create large-scale change they are able to develop trust, empathy, a strong work ethic and self empowerment. While working to develop the skills necessary for a career in animal-focused humanitarian work, they are able to serve TAILS and our community, now and in the future.

HomeBuddies Program

At TAILS Humane Society, we understand that the bond between a pet and caregiver is extremely strong. Pet ownership has also been shown to have significant health benefits, especially among the homebound and elderly. Pet owners report 21% fewer trips to the doctor, live more active lives, and feel less lonely and depressed compared with non-pet owners. The HomeBuddies Program was created in partnership with VAC's Meals on Wheels Program, to ensure that the pets belonging to Meals on Wheels clients receive appropriate food, veterinary care, grooming and more....all free of charge!

The Safe Pets Program

The Safe Pets Program was formed in partnership with Safe Passage Domestic Violence Center because domestic violence victims are often unwilling to leave their abuser if they must leave a pet behind. TAILS provides free boarding to the pets of domestic violence victims so that they can go into shelter without fearing for the safety of their pets.
