About Us

Park51 was formed with two goals:

(1) to establish an institution that will foster a greater understanding of the contribution that Muslim Americans make to the nation’s rich cultural, artistic and intellectual heritage, as well the role they play in shaping the America’s evolving national identity; and

(2)to provide a permanent, welcoming prayer space for Muslims living, working and visiting Lower Manhattan.

Park51 has commissioned Pritzker Prize winning architect Jean Nouvel to design a Museum & Sanctuary that will meet these goals. Through a diverse array of public exhibitions, programming, performances and events, the Museum will showcase works and projects that explore and thoughtfully reflect the lives of Muslim Americans. The Sanctuary will continue the overall institutional commitment to public education, welcoming visitors to observe daily and Jum’ah (weekly congregational) prayers and to learn about the religion of Islam and its practitioners.
