Sisu Refuge Farm Sanctuary

Sisu Refuge is a non-profit farmed animal sanctuary that provides lifelong sanctuary and exceptional end-of-life retirement or hospice care to animals who have suffered severe neglect, abuse, and exploitation.

We prioritize rescuing those most impacted by industrial agriculture - particularly commercially farmed pigs - while advocating for their right to live free from harm. Through individualized care, public education, and transparent storytelling, we work to reduce suffering, inspire compassion, and encourage choices that protect animals and the planet we share.

Sisu Refuge is a 47+ acre farm-animal sanctuary located in Duplin County, the most densely concentrated factory-farmed county in the world. Less than an hour from our gates sits the world’s largest pig slaughterhouse, where over 33,000 pigs are killed each day. In the midst of this reality, Sisu Refuge stands as a living alternative - proof that compassion is possible even where exploitation is normalized.

We are home to more than 100 rescued animals, most of them large-breed hogs pulled directly from commercial farming, neglect cases, abandonment, natural disasters, and emergency seizures. Many arrive with complex medical and behavioral needs that require long-term rehabilitation and specialized care.

Founded in February 2019, Sisu Refuge has directly rescued over 1,000 animals and has provided critical placement support and emergency coordination for countless others. Through immersive online storytelling and educational outreach, we have reached hundreds of millions of people worldwide - connecting individuals to the real lives behind the labels of “farmed animals” and inspiring tangible shifts toward compassion-based choices, especially through diet and lifestyle.

In addition to rescue and care, we open our gates to the public to foster meaningful human-animal connections, believing that true systems change begins with empathy, education, and proximity.
