The Adult Volunteer Literacy Program at John Wood Community College exists to provide a crucial connection to bridge the gap between low-skilled adults and their journeys to success. The program pairs adult learners 17 years or older, not enrolled in school, and who function below a ninth grade skill in math, reading, or English language, with a trained volunteer tutor. After an initial intake, that includes assessment, interest survey and goal setting, tutors and adult learners meet weekly to increase reading, math, or English language skills.
