  • Mission

The Legal Project serves low-income New Yorkers who would otherwise have no access to legal representation, including individuals and families, elder citizens, immigrants and domestic violence survivors.

The Legal Project began in 1995 by helping low-income, unrepresented survivors of domestic violence. Over the years, our practice areas have expanded to include homeownership/foreclosure, immigration, human trafficking, veterans, elder law (including wills, living wills, powers of attorney and health care proxies) and eviction defense. In addition, we offer community-based, no cost consultations and workshops to the general public, including Legally Speaking workshops, the Small Business Legal Network, Uncontested Divorce Clinics and the Veterans Law Project. The Legal Project employs both staff attorneys and pro-bono volunteer attorneys from the community, enabling us to maximize the number of clients we can help with limited resources. Our services cover 14 counties in the Greater Capital Region: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington. In 2025, we assisted over 10,000 people. For many working families, we are the only realistic option for legal representation in vital matters pertaining to the essentials of life.

The Legal Project has offices at 204 Lafayette Street, Suite 2, in Schenectady, New York and at 1 Steuben Place in Albany, New York. The Legal Project can be contacted at (518) 435-1770 and online at www.legalproject.org.
