About Us

MEMA-Music (Motivate and Encourage Music- Appreciation) is a 501 c3 education organization. Our goal is to teach young people to think in new and creative ways, solve problems, understand the history of our nation, and become engaged global citizens. MEMA seeks to address the whole person by providing all students the opportunity to be heard while building on individual differences and perspectives.

Music is used as a teaching tool for engaging students in core academia. MEMA shows its participants how to connect particular texts, themes, and units of study to classic popular songs that address the social justice issues and themes. Students explore recordings and videos of the most legendary, critically-acclaimed songs of the 1960's and 1970's, from folk, R&B, rock, hip hop, and blues recording artists---examining how this music played an essential role in generating and sustaining peace and social-movement campaigns.

The program culminates in a student showcase including digital media projects, song-writing, student performances, PSA’s, art projects and dramatic skits written, produced, and performed by students, about a social justice issue of their choice, giving them the opportunity to fully explore and express their individual creative voices.
