About Us

The mission of Thames River Community Service, Inc. is to provide safe housing with support services by creating an environment in which families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness pursue goals for self-sufficiency and control over their lives. This mission is accomplished by promoting family and individual wellness, by empowering people to develop an achievable plan for successful independent living, to pursue significant employment, to acquire life skills and to maintain stability.

For more than 28 years this agency has worked to support the movement to end homelessness in our state. Our vision is that by creating a supportive environment, families can pursue goals that will move them beyond homelessness to stability in permanent housing. To that end, Thames River Community Service, Inc. was established in 1992, initially with the creation of Thames River Family Program (TRFP), a transitional housing program for families headed by single women with their children. More recently, our vision has led us to transition this program to one that now that serves some of our most vulnerable population, young adult parents (18-24 years old) with their children.

In 2008, with funds from the CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, we established a Supportive Housing Program. This program provides case management and rental assistance to nine families in which the head of household has a mental health and/or substance disability.

In 2018, we began subcontracting with the CT Department of Housing to provide a Rapid Rehousing Program for young adults ages 18-24 years of age. This program works with young adults experiencing homelessness to provide housing, temporary rental assistance and case management services.
