Bright Star Books, Inc.

  • Mission

The mission of Bright Star Books, Inc. is to promote a culture of reading by increasing access to and ownership of books for limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region. We aim to do this at the earliest possible age to ensure children grow up habituated to the potential of books as sources of learning and joy.

    About Us

Bright Star Books gives books primarily through our two key programs: Growing Young Readers and Free Book Fairs, which are targeted to reach the children in Greater Akron least likely to have age-appropriate books at home.

Growing Young Readers is our partnership with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) of Summit County, through which we distribute gently used, developmentally appropriate children’s books to their clients, serving thousands of low-income children from birth to age five.

Our Free Book Fairs, in partnership with Akron Public Schools and the Akron YMCA, let elementary and middle-school aged children pick reading level age-appropriate books to take home.

Every year, Bright Star Books gives away more than 50,000 books.
