  • Mission

Established in 2019, Living Limpopo is a non-profit organisation based in Limpopo Province, South Africa that opposes the creation of a new Sacrifice Zone for coal and steel in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve, and advocates for sustainable, nature-positive development in this region of great biodiversity and cultural value. We campaign against the planned exploitation of the Greater Soutpansberg Coalfield and the China-South Africa state-backed industrial mega-project known as the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone, as well as the damming of the Limpopo River. At the same time, Living Limpopo in collaboration with the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve is supporting the creation of the Great Vhembe Conservation Area – a catalytic carbon and biodiversity credit project that will drive significant investment into protected areas expansion and will stimulate sustainable and inclusive growth in the Vhembe mega living landscape.

    About Us

Living Limpopo campaigns to raise public awareness of the industrial-scale threat posed by the MMSEZ and the devastating impact that strip-mining and coal-fuelled industrialisation will have on our sensitive environment, our water resources, on other sectors of the economy and their growth potential. We are actively challenging authorisation for the SEZ and coal mines, while we seek to engage constructively with government on policy debate. We believe that a threat on this scale is also an opportunity. Opposition by those who want a different future for Vhembe has mobilised on an unprecedented scale, and are using the momentum to promote the Great Vhembe Conservation Area - a landscape-scale protected areas expansion and restoration programme that can provide the stimulus for a thriving biodiversity economy in the Vhembe mega-living landscape. We act as a lightning rod to attract support and resources to unleash the wild growth potential of the untamed heart of Limpopo.
