About Us

DESCRIPTION OF ELF

The Environmental Law Foundation (“ELF”) is a legal, nonprofit environmental organization in Oakland, California. ELF’s legal and scientific staff represent environmental organizations, community groups and the general public to enforce Federal and California environmental laws.

ELF's mission is to improve the quality of California’s water resources, and to protect individuals and communities from exposure to toxic chemicals, particularly those individuals who are most at the highest risk of such exposures– inner city dwellers and children. ELF works with other environmental organizations and law firms around the state of California in order to combine resources, scientific knowledge and legal expertise. ELF litigates cases in order to enforce water quality, environmental, toxics, and community right-to-know laws. ELF is also developing a legal strategy that would strengthen several existing laws to protect water - Public Trust Doctrine and the anti-degradation regulations under the Clean Water Act.
