BROOKLYN FREE SCHOOL

  • Mission

Brooklyn Free School’s mission is education for social justice. Always advocating for young people’s voices to be heard, BFS engages students and staff in democratic decision-making and problem solving. We honor student choice and facilitate student-centered learning through play and exploration, constructivist teaching, collaborative course work and self-directed student initiatives. We support social and emotional development through conflict mediation, personal reflection, diversity awareness and community responsibility. BFS works in the service of students and their families, partners with progressive educators, and embraces our larger community.

    About Us

The Brooklyn Free School (BFS) was founded in 2004 by educators and parents. Our mission is to educate for social justice by addressing current social issues connected to the system of white supremacy. In addition to general classes we also provide a host of student interest classes that include ancient Africa, psychology, kitchen science, exploring energy, talking Marxism, fashion, and technology. We serve students ages 4-18 by prioritizing individual learning and from the perspective of societal change. In addition, our student population is from multiple racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds with varied socioeconomic backgrounds to bring different perspectives to the community.
