About Us

San Diego Junior Theatre is an important part of San Diego’s history. Established in 1948 by San Diegan Craig Noel as The Old Globe’s Children’s Wing, it is the oldest theatre company - by and for children - in the United States. Since then, SDJT has been aligned with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. In 1971, we were incorporated as a private, non-profit organization with our own 501 (c)(3) designation. In 2008, San Diego Junior Theatre celebrated its milestone 60th Anniversary.

It is our mission to provide engaging, high-quality theater education and programs for children of all cultural heritages, ages, abilities and levels of interest. Our goal is to accomplish this annually, through six family-friendly main stage shows performed and co-produced by children at the historic Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park; three additional productions at a second stage; and with hundreds of theater arts classes, outreach programs and other community partnerships – all offered to children between the ages of 3 and 18.
