About Us

The root of Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) is a project initiated in 1987 in collaboration with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), as a line of research on sexual and reproductive health, transnational and longitudinal over time, directed by Prof. Adriana Kaplan, anthropologist and director of the Chair of Transfer of Social Knowledge – Research Park UAB – Santander. Since then, a detailed knowledge of FGM/C has been acquired, in The Gambia, in Africa and in the Diaspora.

Established in 1999, WGK is a non-profit organization with international scope, whose main purpose is to promote cooperation and development between the Republic of The Gambia and Spain in the field of health, research and education.

Focused on the health sector in The Gambia, the NGO Wassu Gambia Kafo is one of the two research and training centres of the Transnational Observatory of Applied Research to New Strategies for the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, hosted by Wassu-UAB Foundation, at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
