About Us

Far West Center opened in 1974, and remains the only community mental health center serving the wide geographic western region of Cuyahoga County and only one of two community mental health centers serving all of Lorain County. Through our locations in Westlake and Amherst, we provided care for 1700 of our neighbors last year who experienced severe mental health problems. Clinical mental health services are combined with recovery education programs to help persons achieve their highest level of health and well-being. Far West Center is recognized for its innovative, award-wining mental health programming and leadership, focused on the needs of low-income families—the working poor and the non-working poor, with few or no resources to pay for the cost of care. According to one of our clients, “Thank you for helping people like me—the brokest of the broke.” Our area residents have become the unexpected “new faces of poverty,” in communities not known to struggle with resources. We are one of only a handful of safety-net providers based in, and serving, these communities.
