Educator Inspires Youth to Run 1,800 Miles to Raise Funds for Colon Cancer

The ‘Road Warriors’ to ‘Stride Against Colon Cancer’ from Florida to Michigan

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – (March 13, 2012) The Road Warriors, a Florida-based group of committed runners devoted to raising awareness and funds for colon cancer, will make a remarkable 1,800 mile journey on foot from Greenacres, Fla., to Lake Orion, Mich., beginning June 9, 2012 to July 4, 2012. The Road Warriors hope to hit their fundraising goal of $60,000 with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the Cancer Alliance to fund colon cancer research. “There’s two main goals of the Road Warrior running program, raise money for colon cancer and create a committed training program for underprivileged youth that promotes success in education and fitness goals,” said Brian Thomas, Founder of the Road Warriors Corp. “Everybody knows somebody who has or had cancer and the Road Warriors running program was formed to help build awareness and funding for colon cancer, which is sadly the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths.”

In his continued effort to educate and inspire youth to make their dreams a reality, Florida middle school science teacher, track coach and accomplished long distance runner, Brian Thomas forged the Road Warriors Corp. running team comprised of himself, partner Stephanie Schreiber and two students, Brandon Mercado and Ramiro Melendez, both whom Thomas has willingly took “under his wing” to train and foster the importance of continued education and the power of perseverance.

“Four years ago, Brandon and Ramiro were inspired by my solo 1,200 mile run from Florida to Michigan that raised funds for cerebral palsy. As their track coach, I made a promise to both of them that they too could train and run a long distance race for a cause as long as they maintained their studies and trained hard and I’m proud to report that they have risen to the occasion,” Thomas adds.

Beginning June 9^th, the Road Warrior team will take turns running more than 80 miles per day through eight different states including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and hitting the finish line in Lake Orion, Mich., Thomas’ hometown.

The Road Warriors is a non-profit corporation that is dedicated to helping advance and finance colon cancer research and informing citizens on the lifelong advantages of running and living a healthy lifestyle. The Road Warrior team has personally dedicated themselves to a 52-week, six days/120 miles per week training program where each member has individually logged hundreds of miles.
