Mission Statement: The HDCG mission is to create effective pathways for intergenerational residents to overcome economic, social, and housing injustices.
Vision Statement: Through grassroots efforts, we are building a community of hope, justice, and opportunity where all residents have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.
Core Values
Grassroots Community Leadership: We believe that grassroots leadership is people-centered, and the people most affected by a problem must be the ones who determine and fight for the solutions.
People/Residents are Valuable. We value people and their goals as opposed to nonprofits, working across or unilaterally, as opposed to top down. Land/development doesn’t matter as much as peoples’ everyday lives.
Equity and Social Justice: We are actively committed to the fight for equity, abilities, and social justice, as it relates to race, class, gender, and other areas of disenfranchisement, in our communities.
Housing is a human right. Homeowners are struggling; we must respect the right of every individual to have shelter that is safe, warm, and equitable. We must respect differences.
Education is a human right. We fight for quality education as a fundamental human right and a strategy for building power to shape the community’s future.
Economic justice is a human right. Every human being who is capable deserves to have a sufficient income to cover daily expenses, including food, decent clothing, safe shelter. Where necessary, human being have the right to achieve training to qualify them for a suitable trade or profession.
Movement building: We believe that we must form strategic alliances with other community organizations and residents to build a movement capable of winning long-term systemic social change because we cannot achieve our vision alone.
Innovation: We are working to solve some of our community’s toughest challenges, and this requires bold and innovative leadership. We must consistently challenge ourselves to leverage our strengths in new and creative ways. (Include language suggested by Njaimeh. Also, look for Homes for All language.)
