About Us

We are a nonprofit educational program designed to fight illiteracy in Crittenden County. Our program serves functionally illiterate adults (16 and over) who are residents of Crittenden County. The Literacy Council is housed on the Mid-South Community College campus, and works in a close partnership with their Adult Education Program. Our program relies on volunteers to tutor adult learners to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Tutoring is done in group or individually, depending on the tutor preference and the learner's needs. The Literacy Council helps enable personal empowerment and independence for each of our students. By helping the students improve his or her reading skills, the volunteer tutor also helps improve the student's quality of life, the lives of the student's family members, and the quality of our community.
