Vision
Ubuntu (oo-buun-tu) is an idea from the Southern African region that summarizes the Zulu proverb: “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu [a person is a person through other persons, or I am because we are].” It acknowledges our inherent interconnectedness across age, culture, gender, socio-economic, and racial differences. In the Ubuntu Academy, we have a chance to interact as parents, children, mentors, tutors, friends and partners in a community that commits to the welfare of children and youth –and brings out the best in all of us. Initially operating on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Academy will provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to help children succeed in their current school setting. The Academy will begin with children in the 1st-5th grades and expand as the program is phased in. The goal is to provide one-on-one tutoring relationships with every child who commits to participating, so that as the base of volunteers from the community grows so can the number of students.
Mission
To encourage children from low-income families to succeed in middle and high school, and be able to apply to college, by partnering with them to overcome academic and financial obstacles.
