About Us

Did you know that a charter school is a public school? Charters are open to all children! They are free of cost to attend! There are no special requirements to be a student! Unlike traditional schools, charters must perform well or they get shut down. Charters have the freedom to create their own curriculum and culture. They can partner with parents, teachers, students and the community to achieve better results.

To succeed, great charter schools also need great boards, and great boards need great people!

Learning by Design (LbD) Charter School is a proposed TK-5th grade charter school that will open its doors in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Angeles Mesa in August of 2018. Starting with grades TK-1st, it will eventually serve approximately 400 in grades TK-5th. LbD’s mission is to promote educational equity through three innovative practices; Personalized Learning, Maker-Centered Learning, and Democratic Style Learning. During Personalized Learning, students work collaboratively with teachers, learning mentors, and parents to customize a curriculum that addresses their personal needs using resources such as one-on-one conferencing with the teachers, on-line curriculum, small group instruction, as well as whole group instruction. Maker-Centered Learning is centered on standards-based projects that require students to solve real world problems using technology and raw materials. As Democratic Learners, students are empowered and given the tools to developed self-advocacy.

Learning by Design is currently looking to add members to its founding board. Professionals with backgrounds in finance, law, strategy, human resources, fundraising/development, and other business skill sets are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in candidates with deep finance and legal experience. If you are interested in joining a great organization and using your skills and experience to do great things for the students of South Los Angeles, please apply by submitting a resume to info@learningbydesignschools.org
