Hero Kids Foundation (HKF) exists to strengthen and support the families of First Responders and military service members through nature-based team building, outdoor learning, and resiliency-focused programming. Based in Suffolk, Virginia, HKF provides safe, mission-driven opportunities for youth and families to reconnect, heal, and grow through hands-on experiences in environmental science, animal interaction, horticultural wellness, and outdoor challenge-based activities. HKF’s programs are designed to reduce isolation, build healthy coping skills, restore confidence, and reinforce the strength of the family unit. By combining structured programming with a welcoming community environment, HKF helps families carry the weight of service together—giving light to those who serve at home.
Hero Kids Foundation is a Suffolk, Virginia–based nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the families of those who serve—particularly military members, veterans, and first responders—through nature-based programs that foster resilience, wellness, and community connection. Founded by John A. Raniowski, a former Naval Special Warfare Corpsman, the organization was born from the belief that service members’ families often carry the unseen weight of that service. Hero Kids Foundation was established to provide a place where those families could reconnect, heal, and grow stronger together through shared experiences in nature.
At the heart of the organization is the Nature Center of Excellence, a community space where programs blend outdoor learning, environmental stewardship, and wellness. Initiatives include the Trail of Heroes—an accessible nature trail designed for individuals with mobility challenges—the NASA STEAM GLOBE environmental science program for youth, horticultural wellness and therapy gardens, animal-assisted engagement programs, and storytelling initiatives such as Giving Voice to Those Who Serve at Home. These programs encourage teamwork, empathy, and reflection while giving families opportunities to step away from daily pressures and reconnect with one another.
Hero Kids Foundation serves families throughout Western Tidewater and the greater Hampton Roads region, with a particular focus on military children, veterans—especially those facing mobility challenges or isolation—and first responder families who often experience the secondary stresses of service. Programs intentionally bring multiple generations together, allowing children, parents, and grandparents to participate side by side in activities that build confidence, leadership, and emotional well-being.
The foundation’s values center on service, stewardship, and community responsibility. Volunteers are a major force behind the mission, with hundreds contributing each year through hands-on work at the Nature Center, program facilitation, and mentorship. By combining environmental education, wellness programming, and strong community partnerships, Hero Kids Foundation seeks to create lasting opportunities for families to heal, learn, and rediscover the strength that comes from serving—and supporting one another—together.
