About Us

Upward Scholars helps low-income adults, mostly immigrants, overcome the financial and academic barriers that limit their success. We provide scholarships that cover students' textbooks and transportation to college, laptops, tutors, mentors, and additional support services.

Most Upward Scholars students have minimum wage jobs. With Upward Scholars' support, students can attend community college for about $30 a semester.

The Upward Scholars tutoring program matches students with community volunteers who tutor students weekly. Tutors assist students with homework, help them hone their speaking skills, and coach them on effective study habits. In fall 2017, about sixty students were meeting regularly with Upward Scholars tutors.

As a community organization, Upward Scholars is committed to fostering meaningful and enduring connections between students and community members. We build community support in these ways: Conversations clubs, mentorships,
