About Us

S.E.M. Ensemble is one of the oldest new music ensembles in the U.S. Since 1970, it has been presenting programs with a focus on the music of John Cage, Morton Feldman, and their contemporaries, including European composers.

The authenticity of performances—and the programs themselves—are the aspects that make S.E.M. Ensemble concerts unique. The Ensemble has collaborated and often performed with composers such as Earle Brown, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros, David Tudor, Christian Wolff and Louis Andriessen, to name just a few. The S.E.M. Ensemble consistently performs programs that no other group presents, either here in the U.S. or in Europe.

“The composer Petr Kotik and his S.E.M. Ensemble take a longer and broader view of the contemporary repertory than most new-music groups” -New York Times, 2008
