The Billy DeFrank Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) Community Center strengthens communities by developing diverse resources that empower lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. We provide a range of services to youth, families, adults and seniors.
The scope of these resources is unique in the greater San Jose area. Each month, over a thousand people visit the Billy DeFrank Center, and many more call our Information & Resources number, from as far away as Foster City and Gilroy.
The Center was founded in 1981 in a two-room storefront. In 1994, the Billy DeFrank Center became a member agency of the United Way of Santa Clara County. In 1998, the Center began receiving funding from Santa Clara County Social Service Agency.
A capital campaign resulted in the construction of yet a new facility. At its grand opening in June 2004, San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales spoke, citing the Center as “an invaluable resource for people in our community.”
