About Us

The Texas Observer is a progressive monthly magazine providing sharp wit and sharper eyes on the politics, policies and culture of the most exciting state in the union. Since our founding in 1954, we've covered issues around Texas that have gone largely unnoticed or unreported in the mainstream media. Our website provides up-to-the-minute news on everything from politics to environmental and border reporting. Our goal is to cover stories crucial to the public interest and to provoke dialogue that promotes democratic participation and open government, in pursuit of a vision of Texas where education, justice and material progress are available to all.Over five decades, we've been home to famous reporters from Molly Ivins and Willie Morris to 2010 Pulitzer Prize Winner Jake Bernstein. We've won 49 awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and been finalists for the National Magazine Award. In 2005, Utne Reader listed the Observer as the Best Political Magazine.
