Retreat Farm, Ltd.
Founded in 1837, Retreat Farm is the original asylum farm for the Brattleboro Retreat. The Farm was the country's first established to serve a psychiatric hospital. Once a source of food, fuel, and therapy for mental health patients, today the Farm remains an expansive and vital public resource featuring 500 acres of conserved forests, farmlands, waters, and trails.
Situated adjacent to downtown Brattleboro, at the confluence of the West and Connecticut Rivers, Retreat Farm’s centerpiece is a nine-building historic farmstead surrounded by a vibrant campus of agricultural and forest lands. We have beautifully restored a number of event areas, including a central square for gatherings, an outdoor pavilion, and an elevated event meadow.
Retreat Farm, Ltd. (RFL), a 501(c)(3) public charity, was formed in 2015 to restore and preserve the lands, waters, and buildings. Working with experts and community stakeholders, we are implementing a cohesive strategy to repurpose the entire property as a vital natural and cultural commons connecting Vermonters and visitors alike to the land and one-another through educational programs, recreation resources, land-based enterprise, and community events.
