About Us

PATH is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization incorporated on June 5th, 1986. Our mission is to safety connect people and places on Hawaii Island with pathways and bikeways. PATH believes that a sustainable island and a healthy population require safe places to walk and bike, to and from school, to the shoreline and mountains, to work and to play. Founded in 1986, PATH’s focus is on traffic safety education and creating a safe environment on roadways and trails for recreation, fitness and alternative modes of transportation.

PATH has created a number of first-in-the-state in-school bike and pedestrian safety programs. PATH also facilitates a thriving Safe Routes to School program that addresses the traffic safety education and safety improvement in school zones across the island.

Beyond the school environment, PATH has helped to create many physical changes, including creation of the only two separated multi-use pathways on the island. PATH continues to advocate for safe walking and bicycling in all Hawaii Island communities through representation in virtually every possible initiative, working with the County Department of Planning and Public Works, the State Department of Transportation and sister organizations and alliances state wide.
