At Magic Cabinet (MC) we support the whole nonprofit, not just its programs. By focusing our long-term grants on capacity building, we enable community-focused nonprofits to grow their impact while fulfilling their missions faster. It is our vision that results-oriented giving can transform the world.

LONG-TERM GRANTS

MC commits to supporting its nonprofits for five-year grant terms. By doing so, our grantees quickly move past the symptoms of the "nonprofit starvation cycle,"​ giving them the opportunity to focus their capacity efforts on sustainable success and expansion.  

A FOCUS ON CAPACITY BUILDING 

Rather than focusing on specific programs, we partner with nonprofits to increase their internal capacity. We believe that by taking a capacity-first approach, we are setting up nonprofits for efficient growth and faster mission fulfillment. Capacity building grants can be the salary for a new position, updated computer equipment, software subscription service fees, employee training, or other needs typically classified as "overhead."​ By doing so, nonprofits have the proper support to run stronger programs more efficiently, resulting in profound community impact and expedited mission fulfillment. 

LEVERAGE COMMUNITY EXPERTISE

MC relies on a Cohort model of grant-making that leverages community expertise. We do this by grouping nonprofits that tackle different issues affecting the same community into a single Cohort. Each nonprofit inside the Cohort assigns a voting member. When one of the nonprofits inside that Cohort wants a new capacity grant funded, they present the grant proposal to the Cohort. The Cohort votes if the grant is approved or offers expert advice on how to make the grant application stronger. This approach results in KBF funding grants made stronger through input from nonprofit experts and more importantly, grants that are shaped by the community they serve.
