About Us

Vision: Dance Institute of Washington increases the inclusivity and diverse representation at every level of the professional ballet and dance industries locally in DC, and through that exemplary effort, impacts racial and economic equity in dance nationally and globally.

Theory of Change: DIW delivers on three core commitments:

-Artistic excellence: great teachers, training, and performance opportunities;

-Access, equity, inclusion: effective outreach, community partnerships, cultural competency, and elimination of the economic/social barriers to participation;

-Beneficial wrap-around services: tutoring, life skills, mentoring, workforce development to address deficits in underserved populations pursuing a professional dance career.

DIW acts as a pipeline for many hundreds more dancers of all backgrounds to advance successfully into the dance industry, inclusive of college/careers. At DIW, dancers benefit from safety/structure, feel membership/belonging, and develop self-esteem, creativity and confidence.

Mission: DIW provides youth the opportunity to develop artistically, socially, emotionally and intellectually through ballet and diverse dance. Its commitments to access, equity and artistic excellence distinguish DIW from others. DIW operates a pre-professional school, community engagement initiatives, youth ensemble and professional company, granting youth from diverse backgrounds the chance to experience the performing arts and develop skills needed for college/careers.
