Chatham Habitat for Humanity (CHFH), an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, has been an active part of Chatham County since 1989 when volunteers in the community noticed the growing need for decent, safe, affordable housing. We have completed over 100 houses.
Families are approved for a Habitat home based on their need, their ability to commit to a mortgage, and their willingness to contribute at least 350 hours of labor or sweat equity.
Over 300 Chatham County residents have benefited from moving into a safe, decent Habitat home. Many children in these homes previously lived in housing with rotting floors and ceilings, inadequate or nonexistent indoor plumbing, no heat and faulty wiring. Some families have previously lived in neighborhoods of violence and drug activity. The solution to poverty housing is through the empowerment of individuals, families and communities.
