  • Mission

To protect and preserve the Upper Newport Back Bay and its watershed through education, restoration, research and advocacy.

    About Us

"Friends of Newport Bay" started in 1968 advocating for the protection of the Upper Newport Bay (UNB) when it was threatened by development. After 15 years of protest, 650 acres of tidelands were declared an Ecological Reserve managed by the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, while the County of Orange subsequently declared 200 acres of adjacent uplands a Nature Preserve making it the largest natural estuary in Southern California. Today, the Newport Bay Conservancy is passionate about preserving UNB using hundreds of Volunteer Naturalists to lead programs supporting the areas of education, restoration, research and advocacy.
