  • Mission

The mission of the Morris County Park Commission's Historic Speedwell, a National Historic Landmark site, is to advance public awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the site and its historical significance, which includes: the perfection of the telegraph and its role in the development of communications, the domestic and industrial life of Stephen Vail (1780-1864) and his family, and the history of the Speedwell Ironworks. Historic Speedwell pursues its mission through restoration of the site, artifact collections, exhibits, guided tours, school programs, and special event programming. Historic Speedwell reflects and complements the goals of the Morris County Park Commission, which include preserving local heritage and protecting open space, while maintaining its historic role in the global development of telecommunications.
