About Us

Our mission is to create a community of fully literate adults through student centered instruction that catalyzes career readiness and advancement. Nationally recognized by the Library of Congress with a Best Practices Literacy Award, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) is known for its cutting edge, student-centered, technology-enriched curriculum that successfully meets the needs of low literate adults. Since its founding in 1972, LVGH's highly trained volunteer tutors have helped more than 20,000 adults from across the region learn to read, write, speak English, and develop multi-dimensional literacy skills. Initially a small, grassroots volunteer tutoring service, today LVGH has grown to teach over 900 low literate adults annually in its Hartford and East Hartford Literacy Centers. Our broad array of programming meets the unique and diverse educational needs of low literate adults, providing small group instruction in English for Speakers of Other Languages, Basic Literacy, Digital Literacy, Math,Citizenship, high school completion preparation and Career Pathways, which provides career counseling, job training and placement. Through our newest program, Early Literacy, we provide childcare enriched with early literacy activities for the children of parents who are in class with us.
