City of Lakes AmeriCorps - Minneapolis Community Education
City of Lakes AmeriCorps is a partnership between Minneapolis Community Education and the Multilingual Department of Minneapolis Public Schools. We strive to bridge the language and opportunity gap for Long-Term English Learner students (LTELs) in Minneapolis Public Schools. Our goal for our students is that they are engaged and empowered to achieve their full potential. Our goal for our members is that they are engaged and empowered to serve as values-driven leaders in their communities.
City of Lakes AmeriCorps is one of the oldest AmeriCorps programs in the Twin Cities. For more than 20 years our members have served the youth of Minneapolis as tutors, out-of-school enrichment leaders, and positive adult role models who inspire youth to reach their full potential. City of Lakes members serve in middle schools throughout the Minneapolis Public Schools district providing academic support and after school enrichment opportunities for long-term English Learners. Our members engage students in their English language development through intentional interactions, research-based strategies, technology incorporation, and youth development best practices.
Our ability to support the academic and developmental needs of our students depends on the relationships members build with their students, which is at the heart of all that we do. Our members gain unparalleled hands-on experience working with students, teachers, families, and fellow corps members. They serve as a cohort of emerging leaders who focus on developing their professional and interpersonal skills while exploring the fields of education and youth development within the context of a large urban school system.
