Erasing the Distance's (ETD) mission is to disarm stigma, spark dialogue, educate, and promote healing surrounding issues of mental health through the power of performance. We accomplish this mission by gathering, transcribing and sculpting true stories of people impacted by mental health issues into monologues, scenes and full productions. Our ensemble of professional actors, often seen on such stages as Steppenwolf, The Goodman, Victory Gardens, and the Court, then brings these stories to life in performances on stage.
ETD offers custom performances to enliven meetings, conferences, events, and curriculum for organizations and schools around the country, in addition to providing high quality public performances in local theaters. Every performance is followed by a moderated, interactive dialogue with the audience that explores the play’s themes and identifies mental illness signs, symptoms, recovery options, and community resources. We also teach our unique methodology of gathering and transforming true stories into performance pieces to artists, mental health advocates, current/future clinicians and community members.
