Sustainable Coffee Bay

Sustainable Coffee Bay (SCB) was formally started in 2011, but grew out of the projects that have been run informally by Coffee Shack Backpackers as far back as 2002. SCB has three major focus areas: Early Childhood Development, Education and Youth Development, and Rural Assistance.

We serve a rural community in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Our biggest programme is our Early Childhood development Programme (60 children daily) and we run a number of other wider ECD initiatives.

Our youth development work supports local youth to complete quality education, setting them up for a successful career and the ability to provide for themselves and their families. The approach helps create role models for the other youth of Coffee Bay and highlights the importance of education. Our work includes supporting current and former students with university/job applications; ensuring children are registered socially and are healthy; motivating for drivers’ licenses to increase employability; and providing work experience opportunities.

We also run a number of other rural assistance projects that assist older members of the community.
