Fishers Island Waste Management District

  • About Us

Fishers Island Waste Management District is a special tax district of Southold, New York, located on a small island hamlet (c. 4 acres) with a year-round population of 250 that expands by a factor of ten in the summer months. As an island community, we are acutely aware of resource limitations and the carbon footprint of transporting waste. To that end, we ask our customers to help us "move beyond waste" and participate in a range of diversion programs, including our food scraps to compost program and our yard waste to cordwood program: waste becomes resource in the form of free compost and firewood. We also actively seek ways to partner with local organizations including the public school, local museum and land trust, conservancy, and community center. We are looking for an energetic, hands-on, collaborative individual to join our team and lead us into the next phase of sustainable and resilient resource management.
