University Settlement at the Houston Street Center

  • About Us

University Settlement, founded in 1886, is America's first social settlement. Located on the Lower East Side, it has always served a largely immigrant community; today that community is predominantly Asian and Latino. Our programs include adult literacy classes, mental health counseling, child care, housing assistance, job training, after-school and summer camp programs, youth development, senior services, arts programs, and a credit union. The Houston Street Center is a 44,000-square-foot community center co-owned and co-operated by University Settlement and the Chinatown YMCA. With state-of-the-art recreational and educational facilities, and plenty of flexible space, this center is a unique neighborhood resource. Univeristy Settlement's role in this center includes providing an after-school youth program, a program for seniors, and a "community swim" for all members of the community to partcipate in.
