For over thirty years, Martin House's "open door" has been bringing hope and opportunity to the residents in the Wilbur Section of Trenton, New Jersey through its Martin House Family of Programs. We are pleased to celebrate the following accomplishments:
Homes the poor can pay for: Better Community House of Trenton, Inc. has completely renovated 109 abandoned houses over the past three decades, built 65 new town homes and granted 147 mortgages, 66 of which have been retired. An additional 20 homes are currently under construction which will be sold for about $25,000 with both a twelve year 0% mortgage and a twelve year sweat equity period.
Education: The Martin House Learning Center provides educational instruction to over 350 children and adults each week. Our programs include Abbott-designated preschool and after school academic instruction and tutoring. Also included are GED courses, Daylight-Twilight high school classes, literacy and ESL classes, specialized programs for both unruly youngsters and for motivated students, educational summer camp, computer instruction and a variety of extracurricular activities. The primary mission of the learning center is to help young people understand the value of education and earn their high school diplomas.
Hope for the homeless: Doorway to Hope, Inc. provides single mothers with housing and life skills programs, enabling them to become self-sufficient. Over 350 homeless families have received shelter through this transitional housing program.
Martin House Clothing Storeis operated by neighborhood women and is dedicated to providing quality secondhand clothes, furniture and household appliances to the poor of the Wilbur neighborhood.
