Matinicus Island School

Matinicus, ME

About Us

Matinicus Island School is a one-room school with seven students in grades K-8. Matinicus Elementary has no principal. There is a three-member board of directors for the school. Board members live on the island and work closely with the school and staff. Our school is an important hub of community activity. The school is well-equipped in terms of both technological and curricular resources.

Matinicus is a commercial fishing (lobstering) community located approximately 24 miles from Rockland, Maine. The two square-mile island is accessible by small airplane from the Knox County Regional Airport (a 15-minute ride,) or by water taxi three seasons (trip takes about one hour). There is one small seasonal grocery store, a church with regular services during summer only, and a post office. Telephone, Internet, and electricity are modern and reliable. There is no physician or clinic, and no guarantee of transportation off the island in poor weather. Matinicus has a fluctuating population depending on the season. Summertime sees upwards of 200, while mid-winter population can shrink to 30 people.

Interested persons who would like more information on island life, or our one-room school, before making formal application may call or e-mail school board member:

Applicants with families should be aware that very limited opportunities exist for regular employment on Matinicus.
