FLAMA’s mission is based in Frank Liu Jr.'s visionary dream to create a music and art focused school for the youth of Houston. Frank possessed a deep understanding of the power of music as a means of education, fostering imagination, and building a strong sense of community.
Based in the 2nd Ward, FLAMA aims to ensure that the youth of the 2nd, 3rd and 5th Wards benefit from the East End’s Cultural District designation by providing quality music and art education in addition to rigorous academics.
Frank Liu Jr. Academy for Music & Arts (FLAMA) is a public open-enrollment charter school opening in Houston’s East End to serve students and families in the city’s Second, Third, and Fifth Wards. Our mission is to inspire a joy for learning through the integration of academic rigor, cognitive science, and the arts.
Founded on the vision of Houston arts patron Frank Liu Jr., FLAMA believes that music and the arts are powerful pathways for learning, creativity, and community connection. Students will experience a strong academic program alongside daily instruction in music and visual arts, helping them develop focus, perseverance, collaboration, and creative expression.
FLAMA will open in August 2027 with kindergarten and first grade, adding a grade each year until serving Pre-K4 through eighth grade. When fully enrolled, the school will serve approximately 875 students in a vibrant arts-centered campus in Houston’s historic East End.
