About Us

Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and the process of art making in the urban environment. Through a transparent creative process open to everyone, AiO acts as a catalyst for a contemporary re-framing of the tradition of creating art en plein air (working outside, on-site), inspiring both artists and audience to see the river and city beyond in new ways. Art in the Open strives to make the artistic process accessible to diverse audiences of all ages.

Art in the Open 2104 will run from May 16-18th along the Schuylkill River Banks Park. A jury-selected group of thirty one artists from all over the world will create new works in a range of mediums along the river banks. An exhibition of selected juried works created will be installed June 2014 at the Center for Emerging VIsual Artists.

Partnering institutions throughout Philadelphia will offer extensive opportunities for public engagement through complementary programming presented both prior to and during the four day event, showcasing the vibrant community of working artists, galleries and institutions that make Philadelphia a major Urban Art Center while celebrating the extraordinary natural resource of the city’s river.
