About Us

Mission: "The Tenement Museum preserves and interprets the history of immigration through the personal experiences of the generations of newcomers who settled in and built lives on Manhattan's Lower East Side, America's iconic immigrant neighborhood; forges emotional connections between visitors and immigrants past and present; and enhances appreciation for the profound role immigration has played and continues to play in shaping America's evolving national identity."

The heart of the Tenement Museum is 97 Orchard Street, its landmark tenement building, home to 7,000 people from over 20 nations from 1863 to 1935. In addition to offering museum tours, living history programs & neighborhood walking tours, the Museum is committed to serving its community & using history as a tool to address issues affecting NYC today, including racism, poverty, housing, and healthcare.
