Austin State School
Austin State School operates under the supervision of the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services as one of 11 residential facilities serving people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Opened in 1917, Austin State School is the oldest of the state's residential facilities for people with mental retardation. It is located on 95 oak-covered acres at 2203 W. 35th Street on the west side of Austin. The facility is close to residential and shopping areas with public transportation access on the grounds. The facility provides services both to people who live on the grounds and also to those who participate in our community programs.
